Welcome!

Welcome to Eudora Welty in Focus. This blog is designed to promote events taking place in the Piedmont Technical College Library during October 2009.

“Welty,” a traveling photography exhibit sponsored by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, will be on display at the Piedmont Technical College Library during the month of October. The exhibit consists of fourteen photographs and passages from the writings of Eudora Welty, the world-renowned Southern author who died in 2001.

Most of the photographs were taken in the 1930s, at the height of the Great Depression, during Welty’s stint as a publicist for the Works Progress Administration (WPA). She traveled her native state of Mississippi, photographing, as she put it, “human beings because they were real life and they were there in front of me and that was the reality.”

The exhibit will run concurrently with PTC’s One Book, One College programming. During this annual event, PTC students, faculty, and the greater community are encouraged to read the same book. This year’s selection is The Optimist’s Daughter, Welty’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. Weekly events and speakers will be scheduled during October to discuss the book. A calendar of these events will be posted shortly, so keep reading!
